This is the text of the note we found in the Operation Futari cache. The *'s represent "blood drops" on the paper.
I found Endo. He was still alive and hiding here. Apparently he had been
able to survive in these hills without detection. He never found my messages,
so he was not expecting me. He heard me approach, calling his name. He
thought it was a trick by Americans who had discovered his existence. He shot
me as soon as I appeared. I fell down and hit my head, blacking out. When
I came to, I saw Lt. Endo lying on the ground, gravely wounded. He was
still alive, though, and told me that he believed he had killed me. He said he had
searched my body and found the pictures of his family and his army unit that
I brought to prove to him I was legitimate. He also found my copy of the
code sheet he had memorized. Then he realized what he had done. He knew
he had killed a fellow soldier sent to rescue him, and destroyed his only
chance to return to his homeland and see his family. Out of despair and
shame he turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger. The ammunition
was so old, it did not have much power, but the wound was still too much
for his body. After telling me this, he died as I tried to save him.
Fortunately, the bullet that struck me was also old and weak. My wound
is serious, and I am still bleeding, but I think I will survive. I had
enough strength to bury Endo near here, but the effort has left
me weak. The grave is in a place that will never be found. Leave him
in peace. I am writing this message in case I do not make it back.
Endo still wore his dog tag - a terrible breach of security, but apparently
it was his one link to his homeland, and he could not bear to part
with it. I have placed it in the cache as proof that I found him. The
first of you to find this cache, please take the dog tag and return
it to Japan, where it should be buried. That way Endo can have *one
small part *of him returned to his native land. I have left * some
other things *I brought for him. I had hoped the newspapers and
advertisem*ents would convince him America and Japan are now friends.
If I succeed in getting back to civilization, I will return here to
collect these things once I am healthy enough. So if you find this cache
it means I have failed. Please log your find on the Groundspeak
website, so that my superiors may learn of the failure, and notify
our families of our fate. You do not have to give details of what
happened, or reveal the location of the cache. If you log, they
will know the worst has happened.
